My Background

My name is Cortney, and I am a licensed clinical professional counselor. I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and my master’s degree in clinical psychology from Eastern Illinois University. I chose to enter the mental health field because I love to learn about other people, hear their stories, and create meaningful connections, and I love that I can be a supportive part of another person’s journey. Since graduating, I’ve worked in a few different settings, including private practice, residential homes and community mental health, all of which have provided the diverse experiences that have developed the therapist that I am at Empowered.

My work focuses on creating a warm and supportive environment in order to build a strong therapeutic relationship. I always offer empathy and direction while helping my clients to challenge their thoughts and behaviors, and together we build positive insight and tools to cope with life’s ups and downs. I encourage clients to explore the way they relate to themselves and the world around them and to improve relationships and awareness.

My approach to therapy is grounded in holistic care and increasing self awareness. My belief is that mental and physical health are so intertwined, so we can focus on all aspects of a person’s life, including stress, sleep, social life, nutrition and exercise and so much more. While my therapeutic approach is unique to each individual I see, I primarily utilize a client-centered approach, and am influenced by cognitive behavioral, strengths based, and solutions focused therapies. My clinical interests include anxiety and depression, stress, life transition, and relationship challenges.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading or catching up on my shows. I find joy in movement, and love to walk my husky, Enzo, play tennis, or try out classes with friends. Being in Chicago affords us the luxury of so much food and culture, so I’m always striving to try or learn something new!
