My Background

Hi! My name is Mary Stazinski, and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois. I have always been interested in mental health and decided to further develop this passion by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Butler University, followed by a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from DePaul University. I love that being a counselor allows me the opportunity to empower clients and to be a part of their healing journey. I have previous experience working in a non-profit setting with individuals presenting with a variety of concerns such as relational discord, unemployment, and PTSD.

I specialize in working with adults navigating life transitions, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, and relational & communication difficulties. I am particularly interested in working with men on personal and relational issues as well as with individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. My therapeutic approach is primarily insight-oriented, exploring with clients how past experiences link to current behaviors. I also integrate elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Feminist Therapy with an emphasis on mindfulness and self-care strategies. This integrative approach balances exploring the past with applying skills as needed for the present, such as boundary setting, assertive communication, and relaxation techniques. I tailor my approach to each individual, as I do not believe that there is a one size fits all approach.

I view therapy as a collaborative process where we work together to develop and work toward your goals. I aim to help clients feel more confident navigating life’s challenges by fostering self-understanding and equipping them with practical tools. In session, I strive to create a safe and comfortable space through humor, a nonjudgmental attitude, and a framework that is both trauma-informed and culturally sensitive. I understand the significant impact of systemic and social issues on individuals’ lives, mental health, and overall well being, and I welcome conversations to explore, unpack, and process these forces.

Outside of my role as a therapist, I enjoy crafting, reading, and walking around the city. I also spend a lot of my time with my dear cat, Anakin, who you will probably end up meeting or hearing once or twice in a virtual session.
