My Background

My name is Virginia Thornton and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I have a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling obtained from Capella University. I have always had a passion for helping others. This very passion is what drove my motivation to become a counselor. My early career was in case management and during this time, I was able to gain experience working with a wide range of clients and obtain a greater understanding of the importance of mental health needs. I have experience primarily in community mental health settings working with adults providing both individual and group services.

I believe in each client’s ability to draw strength from their unique experiences with the understanding that they are truly the expert on their lives. I view my role as a guide looking to walk alongside my clients through their journey towards healing and wellbeing. My therapeutic orientation and use of interventions is based upon Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I work with clients through this lens to process presenting concerns and learn to develop new patterns of thinking and behavior. My goal for the client in therapy is to create positive change through enlightenment and heightened self-awareness by providing unconditional positive regard, active listening, and empathy. Areas of focus and specialties include anxiety, depression, work-life balance, parental stress, self esteem, adjustments, and trauma.

I spend most of my time outside of the therapy space engaging with family and being a full time mother. I enjoy the oppportunity to travel when able which allows me the ability
to expand my knowledge about other cultures outside of my own. I also find pleasure in dining out, listening to music, exploring new movies, reading, and socializing with
others!
