My Background
Hi! My name is Alana Faulds, and I am a licensed professional counselor. I graduated from Adler University with a dual-master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Sport and Human Performance. My passion for mental health began when I was an athlete in high school, struggling with the many dynamics of being an adolescent, student, athlete and friend. I didn’t always recognize what I needed at the time, but I knew there had to be support out there for people struggling in the same ways I was. It wasn’t until years later that I discovered the world of mental health and mental performance, and everything just clicked. That passion led me to grad school—and eventually, to my role here at Empowered! Since graduating from Adler, I have been working as a counselor at a group practice in Chicago as well as working with athletes on exploring and enhancing their mental performance. My work in group practice, along with my experience supporting athletes and performers, has given me a deep understanding of how identity shapes our experiences and just how much mental wellness impacts every aspect of life.
As a clinician, my approach reflects my core principles: being relational, empathetic, witty, engaging, and open-minded. These principles enable me to build strong relationships with clients, helping them feel seen, supported, and empowered. I support clients facing a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, relationship struggles, performance-related issues, and grief. I recognize that each person’s unique history shapes who they are today.
I firmly believe that we are the experts in our own lives, capable of growth and transformation. My therapeutic practice integrates multiple approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Psychodynamic Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This allows my clients to explore their personal narratives, challenge limiting beliefs, and embrace their emotions.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a safe, comfortable space where you can be your most vulnerable self—so you can uncover your most confident self and feel truly proud of who you are.
Outside of my time at a therapist, I love being active—whether that’s playing a sport, exercising, or going for a walk. One of my favorite things to do is to curl up on my couch and watch new shows and movies or read a book. I also love to explore and travel around Chicago, and when I can, around the world. And all of this is more fun with my family and friends by my side!
